Graham John William Neæra. A Tale of Ancient Rome

Ю. В. Першина Система наказаний в Древнем Риме. The system of punishments in the Ancient Rome

The monograph deals with penalties for crimes of a public nature (against the Roman state, religion and the Christian Church, family and morality) and of a private nature (against personality, property), especially the criminal process in Ancient Rome (its forms, historical development, taking into account the characteristics of the subject of crime in the criminal law of Ancient Rome). The system of punishments in Ancient Rome is presented in the form of a hierarchical «ladder». The ultimate punishment was the death penalty. On the basis of the analysis of sources, domestic and foreign literature the author studies the classification of crimes and the system of punishments in Ancient Rome. The author used the system-structural method. The monograph is intended for use in the educational process by bachelors, masters, specialists studying in the specialty «Jurisprudence», as well as for scientists engaged in the study of Roman law.

Berens E. M. Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece & Rome

HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. This was the slaying of the Minotaur, which put an end forever to the shameful tribute of seven youths and seven maidens which was exacted from the Athenians every nine years. The gods, heroes and legends of Greek mythology and their Roman interpretations are as fascinating as they are instructive. They include the almighty Zeus and his many wives; heroic Perseus, slayer of the snake-headed Medusa; Helen of Troy, whose beauty caused a great war; Medea, driven mad by jealousy; and tragic Persephone, doomed to live half of each year in the Underworld, condemning the world above to winter. First published in 1880, this comprehensive collection is an early modern retelling of the characters and tales of ancient Greece and Rome; a popular account which offers an important insight into the ancient civilisations that it evokes, and forms a basis for our understanding of the classical world.

Christer Henriksén A Companion to Ancient Epigram

A delightful look at the epic literary history of the short, poetic genre of the epigram From Nestor’s inscribed cup to tombstones, bathroom walls, and Twitter tweets, the ability to express oneself concisely and elegantly, continues to be an important part of literary history unlike any other. This book examines the entire history of the epigram, from its beginnings as a purely epigraphic phenomenon in the Greek world, where it moved from being just a note attached to physical objects to an actual literary form of expression, to its zenith in late 1st century Rome, and further through a period of stagnation up to its last blooming, just before the beginning of the Dark Ages. A Companion to Ancient Epigram offers the first ever full-scale treatment of the genre from a broad international perspective. The book is divided into six parts, the first of which covers certain typical characteristics of the genre, examines aspects that are central to our understanding of epigram, and discusses its relation to other literary genres. The subsequent four parts present a diachronic history of epigram, from archaic Greece, Hellenistic Greece, and Latin and Greek epigrams at Rome, all the way up to late antiquity, with a concluding section looking at the heritage of ancient epigram from the Middle Ages up to modern times. Provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the epigram The first single-volume book to examine the entire history of the genre Scholarly interest in Greek and Roman epigram has steadily increased over the past fifty years Looks at not only the origins of the epigram but at the later literary tradition A Companion to Ancient Epigram will be of great interest to scholars and students of literature, world literature, and ancient and general history. It will also be an excellent addition to the shelf of any public and university library.

Jaclyn Neel Early Rome. Myth and Society

The scholarly community has become increasingly aware of the differences between Roman myths and the more familiar myths of Greece. Early Rome: Myth and Society steps in to provide much-needed modern and accessible translations and commentaries on Italian legends. This work examines the tales of Roman pre-and legendary history, discusses relevant cultural and contextual information, and presents author biographies. This book offers updated translations of key texts, including authors who are often absent from classical mythology textbooks, such as Dionysius of Halicarnassus and Servius. Editor Jaclyn Neel debunks the idea that Romans were unimaginative copyists by spotlighting the vitality and flexibility of Italian myth – particularly those parts that are less closely connected to Greek tales, such as the story of Caeculus of Praeneste. Finally, by calling attention to the Italian rather than Roman nature of the collection, this book suggests that Roman culture was broader than the city itself. This important work offers: Up-to-date and accessible translations of Roman and Italic legends from authors throughout antiquity Examination of compelling tales that involve the Roman equivalent of Greek “heroes” Unique view of the strength and plasticity of Roman and Italic myth, particularly the parts less closely connected to familiar Greek tales Intelligent discussion of relevant cultural and contextual information Argument that Roman culture reached far beyond the city of Rome Fresh and readable, Early Rome: Myth and Society offers essential reading for students of ancient Rome as well as those interested in Roman and Greek mythology.
